Hang Down

In fly fishing, “hang down” refers to a specific stage where the rod and line are at the end of a cast and the fly line is fully extended in the water. The hang down occurs during the final moments of the drift, when the line and the fly are directly downstream of the angler.

When the line is allowed to hang down, it means that the angler allows the fly to remain stationary in the water column, with the current pulling on the line. This technique is often employed to imitate an insect that has been carried downstream and has become trapped or injured in the current. By keeping the fly in this position, it can entice fish that are actively feeding or searching for food.
