Double Spey Cast

The Double Spey cast is a staple in the single hand spey casting arsenal to quickly drag your anchor into position and start your D Loop—minimizing casting efforts and maximizing your fish time & coverage.

For right-handed spey casters with a single hand rod, the Double Spey is usually used in river right situations but can be done cack handed on river left as well.

For left-handed spey casters on river right, the Snap T spey cast can be used.

The Double Spey Cast “How-To”

To setup the Double Spey cast, your rod tip and line are low and downstream on the hang down, pointed at the fly.

Slowly lift the rod tip up along the sky and in front of you a bit in an arching motion from downstream to upstream. Continue the motion and drop rod tip to your side—dragging your fly up into your anchor box.

You are now ready for your low sweep into your D loop.

The line and tip type along with the weight of fly being used will play a role in this cast.

Floating tips and smaller flies won’t require much effort to lift and drag to the anchor box. Being over aggressive with the lift may position the fly too far upstream for your cast.

On the other hand, heavy sink tips and large weighted flies may require a bit of extra lifting effort to bring them up high enough on the water to cast.
